Central Grain Inc. was started in 2005 by Sonja Miller and Brian Miller. Both farming together at the time, decided to turn their farm's bin site into a full service commercial grain elevator. Their elevator accepts corn, soy beans, wheat and oats, with corn being their largest intake of crop. They also offer transportation, drying and marketing for farmers. Brian, Sonja and Josh Rieland operate the facility along with four full-time truck drivers. They hire various other trucking companies to help transport the grain throughout the year. They're busy all year round with their busiest times being spring and fall. Spring is time to focus on outbound trucks to make room for new year's crop, and fall harvest season is the busiest time of year for the elevator beginning early August and running through Thanksgiving. According to Sonja, last year's soybean yields were phenomenal.  They were so busy, Sonja, according to her Fitbit, had put on 8 miles of walking in a 10' x 10' area running the scale in one day. The elevator had taken in over 3/4 million bushels of soybeans alone during the harvest season (2 week period). Farmers from as far away as a 60 mile radius will bring their grain to the elevator, or Central Grain Inc. will go to the farm and pick the grain up directly. Once the grain is brought in, it is weighed on a scale. After the grain has been weighed, it is sent to be dumped in the appropriate grain pit. From there, Central Grain Inc. holds the grain until Gavilon Grain gives the order on how much grain should be hauled to various other elevators with the majority going to the river in St. Paul for export. Gavilon Grain, a Japanese company, buys the grain directly from the farmers. Central Grain holds that grain for Gavilon Grain until it is hauled out by truck. From there, it is shipped out via train or barge on the Mississippi River. Essentially, all grain hauled into the elevator is also hauled out of the elevator.  With Brian and Sonja coming from a farm background, they understood the need farmers face all year long and built their business structure around those needs, including extended harvest hours! They have a great team to work with, and they love what they do. Thank you Central Grain Inc. for supporting our community!
